Collection: Carolina Cherry Burl
Carolina Laurel, also called Carolina Cherry, has an incredibly unique grain and color. The dramatic cathedrals and burl make this a valuable, vibrant species amongst woodworkers.
This species of wood is beautiful for more casual/rustic projects and the natural defects such as pitch pockets and pin knots are not too overwhelming – just enough defect that the lumber is still stable.
As cherry wood ages it turns a little darker red – a good quality as it gives finishes more depth and stronger color.
Although it isn't harvested very abundantly, and isn't commonly available in larger boards, cherry is still used for large projects like cabinetry and furniture simply because it is so easy to manipulate and always looks remarkable.
Cherry is structurally stable and highly resistant to rot and decay. Indoor installations constructed using cherry lumber will last for generations, growing richer in color every year.
Uses
Cherry takes finishes very well, but should be avoided if you plan on staining your project, as it tends to absorb dyes and stains unevenly.
Carolina Cherry Burl wood is found in these kinds of objects:
- Cabinetry
- Flooring
- Musical instruments
- Boat interiors
- Jewelry
- Pens, bowls and other ornamental crafts
